Google Gemini Has 350 Million Monthly Users, Far Behind ChatGPT Estimates (2025)

Google Gemini continues to be behind OpenAI’s competing ChatGPT, according to documentation released during a court case.

Data shown in court, and first spotted by The Information, showed Google’s own estimates claiming Gemini has 350 million monthly active users and 35 million daily active users during March 2025.

Google analysts also estimate ChatGPT has 600 million monthly active users and 160 million daily users. This data is only an estimate as OpenAI has yet to reveal its own user numbers.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously hinted that the number is far higher than Google's internal estimate. During a TED conversation interview on April 11, Altman said the service had previously said it had 500 million weekly active users. The interviewer then alluded to the fact Altman had privately told him the company had doubled its user base in recent weeks, suggesting it ChatGPT has hit a billion weekly active users.

Altman didn't specifically say the platform had a billion users, but he followed up the remark saying, “I said that privately, but I guess…" When the interviewer said he'd be willing to cut the remark from the video, Altman said, "That’s okay. No problem. It’s growing very fast.”

Other numbers revealed during Google's court appearances showed Google quickly over the last six months. In October 2024, Google estimates had Gemini at 9 million daily active users and ChatGPT at 90 million.

An interesting element here is the difference between daily active users on both platforms. Gemini has just over half the monthly active users of ChatGPT, when using Google's estimates, but less than a quarter of the daily active users. That suggests Google’s product is used less regularly by its audience.

A big part of Google’s rapid growth in the last six months could be the introduction of Gemini services into other products. Services like Google Docs, Sheets, Gmail, and other applications are now beginning to offer Gemini built-in which may be contributing to the company's expansion.
