The Welsh Mountain Zoo is a conservation park situated in the picturesque landscape of North Wales. It offers visitors the chance to observe rare animals such as red pandas, tigers and snow leopards in their natural habitats. The zoo also has daily animal encounters and allows visitors to experience life as a keeper for a day, but advanced booking is necessary. Additionally, it houses an array of wildlife from around the world like lemurs and penguins.

What a great day out! We loved the mountain Zoo, fabulous knowledge about all the animals, loved the camels and the vulture was really up for a photoshoot with us. It was impressive to see them so close, so big yet graceful! Very much recommend visiting here, it's a great day out for everyone. There were a few cafes, and play parks and picnic spots so you could really make a day of it.

A very good zoo to go too, not too big and can easily see everything in 4 hours, you could easily spend all day here.Events on each day showing the animals off.Staff very friendly and knowledgeable.Definitely recommend coming here instead of the bigger zoos.It has everything. As it's in Wales expect some slopes when walking around.

Really enjoyed our day here. The sea loins and the bear were our highlights. The sea lion talk is great and the keeper very informative and friendly and obviously adores them. The signing is confusing but we managed, just ask someone. The weather was awful at times but we managed and it was worth it.

I was on my way to support Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch Football Club - give me an L, give me an L, give me an A.....etc - and I stopped off at the WMZ (not the White Mountain Zone in Arizona, that you're inevitably going to assume I am referencing). This was Wales, land of leeks, dragons, and my fathers (not mine, but I have eaten Welsh Rarebit so there is Welsh in me). Beautiful views and lots of birds and little monkeys running around. No dragons to be seen - do they hibernate?

Absolutely amazing. Best zoo I've ever visited. They do 'performances' with animals, but only if the animals feel up to it, they do not force them. And they only do tricks that mimic natural behaviours, or are necessary such as positions required to perform health checks.Very impressed. Animals seemed in no way in distress and cared for. Plenty of run and play spaces for kids. The play areas are also designed to accommodate toddle to teen play. The baby play area having smaller climb and play gear and the area geared towards teens has a Zipline

Marlette S — Google review

Beautiful location, good amount of on sight parking. The hills and river makes it a lovely sight to see, plenty of play areas within the ground. Lovely little shop for ice cream and drinks on the entrance. Make sure to have good foot wear as there is hill area to climb up and down because of where it is situated, just have to be mindful of this if you come as a disabled person can be pets you will find difficult to access, there’s also a cafe to eat and over looks the zoo, plenty of animals. Overall a lovely place to visit with the kids.

Fantastic mountain zoo on a sunny day . The views are breathtaking and the zoo is so peaceful with lovely animals. Sea lion feed was particularly enjoyable. They also have rescue seals that come to recover to the zoo, they looked very relaxed indeed having a little holiday 😊

This zoo is child friendly. The staff we interacted with were lovely. We took our 21/2 grandson and he loved it He loved using the signposts around the zoo to get round along with the map of the zoo. We took a pushchair but he walked the whole time.If you struggle walking it does get steep in some parts. As it says it's a mountain or side of one. The views are stunning in some parts of the zoo.Not a load of animals like other zoos but still a good variety. We are going back and going to buy a years membership. Worth every penny.

Really good zoo and reasonably priced. We paid a visit during our stay in Llandudno and was pleasantly surprised. There are plenty of different animals to see and some stunning views of the surrounding area. We could have stayed longer but had other things booked that day. The penguin parade was fun too. Our 2 year old loved it but is quite demanding as there are lots of steep inclines, so bring a pushchair if you don't fancy carrying your kids in the heat.

We enjoyed a lovely day at the Welsh Mountain Zoo, with incredible views over Colwyn Bay, which were a lovely surprise.A good selection of animals to see, although we couldn't see some of them as they were a bit shy, hiding in their enclosures, but this may have been because it was quite a hot day and they were staying out of the sun. It was also a showery day and we found many places to shelter from rain. There are lots of lovely spaces to eat a picnic and spectacular displays of dahlias all over the site when we visited in August. There is also a lovely play park for the kids, with a handy ice cream kiosk nearby.

Lovely zoo! Been here many times over the last 30 years and will keep coming back. Sure it's not as big as some but it more than makes up for it in character. Set over many levels and terrains so be prepared for some walking and some of it is pretty hidden but it's all worth it. Just be aware you are high up and exposed so it gets very windy. Animals are all happy and well looked after, staff are nice and friendly. One final word "penguin parade" ok it's two words but it's very important. Absolutely worth a visit if you are in the area.

3.5/5 - we visited on a Monday in the summer holidays and it was busy. Amazing views and some special enclosures that I haven’t seen elsewhere before, the sea lions and monkeys were particularly good and you can get really close. Not a lot there though, we spent 5 hours doing several circuits and having a picnic. Our children are slightly older (14/10/9) so it may wear younger ones out quicker. Shame there is little visibility of the animals when they are inside / asleep. Lots of no shows despite popping back several times during the day. Drinks expensive £8+ for 2 x coffees but much of a muchness these days. Gates open at 9.30 on the dot not a second before so don’t arrive early. Play area was excellent for all ages and made great use of the space. As a family we really enjoy visiting zoos and couldn’t really give it anymore than 3.5 in comparison to others we have visited.

Really great day out, we were really lucky to see the new leopard cub. Beautiful scenery and the flowers dotted around make the walk to and from the enclosures a lovely experience. Animals are gorgeous and well looked after.

So if anyone reads my reviews is aware I always try to be as honest and constructive as possible to given an honest opion and for people to try and use it to make a good judgment. so this was a very hard decision to score it 3 stars however I feel very warrantied. This is a fantastic zoo and day out and always remains one of my favourites. However its clear its struggling and lacking in a lot of care attention. Quite a few of the exhibits are shut and look like they been left for a long while which has only lead to its decay more. The grass in places is getting really over grown and the grounds are in need of a good general tidy up and clean up. The bins in places where over flowing which was a real put off and gave the final rating. (Picture taken as justification). This leads me to wonder if staff shortages. It was only midweek but id dread to think if was a weekend. They have some great animals which wouldn’t normally see at a large main stream zoo which makes this place special and keeps me returning however it really does need that extra push to keep it in business. I donate as well as paying the entrance fee as believe they do need extra help to keep it going however seems to be something be hide the scenes that’s leading it to need some much loved attention. Please don’t let this place slip anymore in standards.

Great zoo. Easy to get around. Parks for the kids. Easy to get to. Great cafe with fantastic views. Cafe prices and choices really good. Entry prices reasonable too. We'll worth a visit if in the area.

ANT L — Google review

Really good local zoo with a great collection of animals. The zoo has a great layout and you can easily spend most of the day there. There are superb views out to see and of the surrounding hills in the distance.Really reasonably priced for what you get.Plenty of free parking on site.Is quite hilly, can imagine that provides some accessibility difficulties for some.Well worth a visit.Cafe is simply fine, could be better.

Lovely little zoo. My son loved it more so the tigers and the massive snakes. The views are amazing and the shows they do are really good and interesting

So we visited on weds 16th ( booked tickets online ).We were guided to the overflow car park which was grass no issues at all.Walked over the road to the zoo and presented my red code to the man in the hut.Gave us maps and on we went.So below are the points about the zoo.1.toilets clean and presentable.2. Very hilly in parts..yes it’s a mountain zoo so just making people aware.3.plenty of places to sit and eat a picnic or just cool down.4 staff friendly with smiles 👍Some bad points that I thought below.1.little penguin cafe was so manic and busy the queue was out the door and I though this should of been addressed the people working there where fine they just needed way more staff for such a busy day.( maybe management have meetings to discuss weather and footfall etc? ) but yes very busy in there.2 signage wasn’t great for attractions they where all over the place.May I suggest painted animal pictures guiding people to the main animal enclosures? Just a thought.Apart from the above issues it was fine for a few hours just the couple of points above to address.

This is a brilliant zoo, with plenty of animals and wildlife to see. A very picturesque place and stunning views on a sunny day. Booking in advance made entry quick and easy. A map is provided to find your way around. The only improvement I could see was perhaps putting the numbers from the map on the signs around the park to make navigation easier. Well worth a visit

Chris G — Google review

Excellent zoo in stunning surroundings great access to everything. Cafes in sit a little expensive but nice and clean good service. Animals were well cared for. Not too big you can fit it all in in one day but it attracts lots of people revisiting again. Overall a fantastic place with lots of variety

Ian E — Google review

Love it!! The staff was very nice and helpful. It’s very cozy. The layout is very easy to walk all around the zoo so you get to see everything. The car park was very big but if you didn’t got a car , you can get the taxi from colwyn train station (ask for Dales and Atlas)

Yanisa S — Google review

We have an annual pass and live 5 minutes away, so we're here all the time! It's a gorgeous little zoo, perfect if you have a couple of hours and want something different to do. The 3 parks are amazing, one for toddlers, under 6s and a large one for older children with zip wires and steep slides. The gardens around the zoo are also beautiful! Most of the zoo and it's fixtures haven't been changed since I was a child, 30 years ago, but some sections of the zoo are currently closed due to work being done, so hopefully this will update some areas.

Emily V — Google review

A lovely place to visit, whatever the weather!! A great variety of animals to see, with multiple viewing and vantage points at each enclosure.Staff were friendly and helpful and very knowledgeable about all the animals. The lemur walk through was a fantastic experience. Couldn't say which was my favourite animal of the day, but the tigers, otters, red panda and brown bear were amazing to observe.Definitely worth another visit in the future.

KM D — Google review

Really loved this zoo, great location and easy to get to. Wasn't expecting the animals to be out as the weather wasn't great but we saw loads of the animals I wanted to. Only negative i'd say is that maybe the place needed a some paint as some places looked worn. But other than that, fun day out.

Ben G — Google review

Fantastic place to visit. My wife and i brought our 3 year old son who was fascinated the moment we got there. Brilliant play areas also. The animals are amazing. We will certainly be visiting again. Even better that it was a weekday and not too busy.

We had a lovely afternoon at Welsh Mountain Zoo on bank holiday Monday. All the staff were absolutely lovely! The lady doing the talks was brilliant, she was so personable and even humoured my one year old that kept running in and out saying “hello” and “bye bye” every few minutes. The two bird shows were fab! Seeing the penguins so close was amazing! (Make sure you’re at the top rope for the best experience), And the sea lion show was brilliant, you can tell the keepers have a genuine love and respect for the animals. Some of the enclosures are quite old school but exactly what you expect of a little zoo. Nice mix of animals! The alligators enclosure allowed you to get quite close which was amazing. It was extremely steep in places we had a pushchair and some of the hills were killers but it’s a mountain zoo so was to be expected. The views were incredible and the walk down from the tigers down to the sea eagles is so beautiful you could almost forget you’re in a zoo, it’s more like a botanical garden.

Kayleigh R — Google review

Compact zoo that's very easy to walk around as long as you don't mind a few hills. It's not huge but still loads to see and all the animals looked happy and healthy. Amazing experience seeing a snow leopard cub - could have watched her all day! Lovely views all around. Cafe was very busy and expensive so recommend a picnic if you can. Loads of places to sit down.

Christy — Google review

Haven't been here for many years so had a day at the zoo with my grandson.Fistly we had the best weather so that was great,The animals where all well cared for the enclosures where in good condition.Because the enclosures are designed primarily for the inhabitants it was sometimes difficult to spot the animals(would have loved a glimpse of the snow leopards)The flora and fauna where beautiful, some formal, some natural. The Zoo car park is in the centre of the zoo so no need to cart round picnics, baby stuff etc.All in all a grand day out,,, remember though it's called a mountain zoo for a reason, some paths can be unsuitable for some.

John J — Google review

It’s not a very big place and some of the enclosures are very small for the animals. The reptile house was closed and there was no mention of this on arrival so had disappointed kids. The views were lovely.

Kally — Google review

We enjoyed our time and spent about 5 hours here. The zoo is better suited to those who are fairly active as it is very hilly. My four year old was worn out from all the walking. The zoo is situated high up - giving beautiful views in all directions. There are two diners, one was closed as it is quiet season. There is a great children's play area. The car park is free. There are some wonderful animals to see, our favourites were the brown bear, tigers, snow leopards and chimps. Some of the enclosures could be bigger to allow the animals more space. Some areas around the zoo look in need of a revamp. We did witness some works happening in certain areas. Overall a lovely day out.

Emma M — Google review

It's a bit small zoo, not many animals, but it's still well done. It's a mountain zoo, but the zoo itself isn't as hilly as Edinburgh zoo. They do penguin feeding and a sea lion training, which is well worth seeing. But it's so small, depends on your speed, you can expect to spend there 2-3 hours. It's only 4 stars as some exhibits were empty or closed, like Lemur look out and the reptiles. You get really nice view from the top of the zoo too. Overall definitely worth a visit.

Ondra V — Google review

We had a lovely trip to the Welsh Mountain Zoo! All the staff were very friendly, and the place is accessible, even if it is a bit hilly, but hey it's a mountain! We didn't see all of the animals as the weather was a bit grey, but still saw lots! The penguin walk was adorable, I was right at the front and so close! The marmosets and otters were too cute for their own good. We saw one of the bears, tigers, chimps. Didn't see the sea lion show, but they put on their own show for us, swimming playfully back and forth. I do think some of the enclosures could be slightly bigger, especially for the primates and chimpanzees. The only thing that made me sad was looking at the chimps through the glass, their eyes are so human it's hard to not feel like you're looking at a fellow person and I think they need as much enrichment as possible. All of the animals looked very well cared for though.

We loved this zoo. Lovely grounds with such amazing views of the coastline. A wide variety of animals. Parking, cafe, toilet and picnic areas on site. Lovely live shows with the penguin walk about. Kids loved it .

Stacey — Google review

Such a wonderful zoo, views are stunning, staff very friendly and knowledgeable, animals plentiful, a perfect way to spend a day just taking everything in and enjoying what's on offer. Tickets are very fairly priced this has to be a must do activity if you love animals 100% recommend visiting

Keiran — Google review

Was a fab day in North Wales for a change. So we went to the park. Sorry for the 4 star rating. All due to the park closing at 1800 but the Safari restaurant don't do warm meals after 1500. But other than that, it was fantastic!!!! The penguin and sea lion talk was very interesting. Sorry about the wind tho. So no free flight show.

Chris S — Google review

We had a FANTASTIC day out here! We aren’t from the area, and when we read reviews we’re quite cautious because of reviews saying it’s quite hilly - we have a double pram and it wasn’t an issue for us! It’s really accessible! You can clearly tell all the animals are really looked after, and there’s so many to see! From when we arrived the guy selling tickets was really friendly, the lady in the shop was just as friendly and helped move things out the way so our pram could get through - staff smile as you go past etc! Kids absolutely loved it here, if you’re looking for a good few hours out id definitely recommend the Welsh mountain zoo! Such a lovely walk around too, the views are amazing

Lovely hidden gem of a zoo.Featuring the landscape of north wales it has several special attractions like the Red Squirrel breeding and research and the rare Przewalski’s horses through to sea lions and a Penguin parade. The site is compact and moves with the hills so expect to walk up some steep slopes.Access is good with almost all the paths well paved. There are accessible facilities. There are two cafes on site. The play area for the kids is awesome and has lots of things for them to play on.

Sam R — Google review

This sis lovely place to visit, the scenery is the best of any zoo I’ve been too. It’s a relatively small zoo, but the animals look well cared for (as much as they can in a zoo). We didn’t go to either restaurant, but got very lucky with a snow leopard which came right up to the glass where we were.Staff were friendly and helpful, I would absolutely recommend a visit at least once if you’re in north Wales - especially if you have young children!

Very good Zoo nice and small for small kids parks and toilets are very clean. Just parking is limited that is the only down fall

Allen M — Google review

The setting of the zoo is beautiful, and to be honest as a place to walk around and take in the wonderful views and the beautiful gardens and plants it is a lovely day out.I did feel a number of the enclosures just appear to be too small. The enclosure for the brown bear appears to be extremely small for an animal of that size who would naturally be an animal which roams large spaces. Equally, the alligator was sitting in an extremely small space for the size of the animal. The chimpanze enclosure also seemed small. The enclosures are also difficult to get to, some of them with poor viewing areas, with very confusing signage for directions to get around the zoo, and some of the enclosures not being set up well to actually see the animals. The live shows for birds/owls was very interesting with knowledgeable staff who seemed passionate about their work.We also did dine in the restaurant and the food was lovely and quite reasonable.

LJ M — Google review

A charming and excellent zoo. Facilities were all well presented, clean, and the gardens were such a pleasure to walk through between exhibits. The enclosures were very well kept and animals that we saw looked relaxed and well cared for.We were so so lucky to see the new snow leopard cub. The keepers were clearly very proud of him and were both protective, keeping guests from being able to get too close to the den whilst also helping guests catch a glimpse when they were out.Cannot rate this zoo enough, we were so pleasantly surprised that a relatively small zoo could offer so much! Will definitely be back.

Sarah P — Google review

Visited today and wasn't sure what to expect. I'd read reviews so I knew some animals wouldn't be seen, but what we did see was fab. Loved hearing about the 40year old gibbon who was the owners pet and used to roam free around the zoo. Yes some of the enclosures could be bigger, but the animals looked very healthy and happy. As for getting there...its on a mountain so I guess no-one would really think they're going to walk there 🙃

Lynn P — Google review

We had an amazing experience during our recent visit to Welsh Mountain Zoo. The whole family thoroughly enjoyed the trip. The zoo is incredibly spacious and houses a wide variety of animals, allowing you to get up close to most of them, even being able to touch some. It's a perfect place for a leisurely walk, especially when accompanied by kids. The zoo not only offers a fantastic animal viewing experience but also provides additional amenities such as a cafeteria and a play area with swings for the children. The kids had a blast playing there! The only disappointment was that we couldn't catch the tigers in action as both of them were fast asleep. Nonetheless, seeing the majestic pairs of tigers was still a beautiful sight, even if they were asleep.Without a doubt, Welsh Mountain Zoo is worth every penny spent. Compared to other zoos in the country, it stands out as a top-notch destination. Our family purchased a family ticket, which turned out to be slightly more cost-effective, and it definitely enhanced the overall value of our visit. If you're looking for a place that both kids and adults will love, this zoo is a must-visit.

Andy S — Google review

So much fun, with the zoo being a smaller one you get an intimate experience with the animals. The penguin and seal show was very cool. Good food and fantastic park for the kids.... the view of the mountains is breathtaking.

Toni-Marie K — Google review

The Welsh Mountain Zoo appears small on initial arrival. However it provides a full day of enjoyment. Situated a short distance into Colwyn Heights, the zoo provides free parking. Tickets are reasonably priced bearing in mind the conservation work the zoo is also involved in. You get to see so many animals from the snow Leopard to the Alligator. The Sea Lions are impressive and hopefully the pictures and short videos attached reflect this. There are children's play area, restaurant, cafe and gift shop. For those with young children in prams need to consider the area is steep to walk at times. Paths are good to walk on though. We'll worth a visit

A beautiful reasonably sized zoo. Great for families, with wonderful views of the mountains and ocean. Clearly good animal welfare and pleasant staff. Particularly enjoyed the penguin parade and the sea lion training. I also saw the snow leopard, which was a personal highlight!

Amy M — Google review

The zoo is set in a beautiful location overlooking Colwyn Bay. All the animals looked well looked after and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Price of admission I think is very reasonable. Would I recommend 🤔 definitely a "yes".

Michael R — Google review

we recently visited specifically to see the snow leopard cub and had an amazing day. we managed to see most of the animals and some getting fed. we were lucky enough to see the snow leopard cub playing with its mum and when a keeper came over they both went right up to the viewing window, thank you for an unforgettable experience. we really enjoyed the whole zoo

Jennifer ( — Google review

Nice little zoo with great views over Colwyn Bay and inland too.To be honest, don't expect the sheer numbers of animals that you get at somewhere like Chester Zoo, but then again, it doesn't cost as much to get in. 2 seniors cost £32 in September 2024.Gardens are very well kept, so if the weather is nice, it's a great place for a few hours relaxation.
